When the colony ships left the ships that later became the Dawn Sisters, several of them fell victim to a fierce hurricane that blew up, knocking them horribly off course and throwing off their navigation systems. Instead of landing where the rest of the ships had, on the Southern Continent, they were taken irreversibly West, landing in the Northern area of the Western Continent. The land was hostile, as it was the middle of winter at the time, and snow and ice covered the ground. The new inhabitants remained in their ships, only occasionally venturing forth to scout out the land and see what was out there.
On one of those trips, they discovered a clutch of unknown eggs and brought it back for the scientists on board to examine and try and figure out. During that time, those eggs Hatched, revealing themselves to be beautifully hued little creatures, much like the dragons of Terran legend, but much smaller. Their hues were like those of many of the gems that the humans had seen, from the dark Rubies who, by their actions were the Queens of the creatures, to the small Moonstones, with their rainbow sheens and pale bodies.
These creatures Bonded to several of the Scientists, as well as some of the younger members who had been watching the scientists work. These little creatures proved to be loyal and devoted to their human companions, and they were loved by all of the humans, who wanted one of their own.
When the winter ended, the humans left the ships, moving to live in grass huts and caves. It was at this time that the disastrous First Fall happened, killing at least a fifth of the inhabitants of that colony. They saw the little creatures they had Bonded to, dubbed Fire-Lizards, flaming, and tried to figure out how they were doing it. It didn't take them long, and once they had, they immediately started working out a way to make the creatures larger and more powerful. They had the brightest student of the legendary Kitty Ping with them, and he worked out a way to enhance the Fire-lizards, to make them grow stronger, although in the process they also started Bonding more fully to the humans, depending more powerfully on them.
That first clutch had 3 Queens(2 Rubies and a Sugilite), 4 Kings(2 each of Onyx and Diamond), and the other 15 were of various hues and sizes. All Bonded, and those first dragons and riders had to learn how to fight against the dangerous Spores on their own. They taught themselves well, and when the first Fall came after that time, they were ready, and took to the air to face off with it. Two dragons were lost, and one of the vital Queens was injured, leading to them forming their own Wing, led by the oldest rider, by the choice of the other riders as well as those on her fellow Queens.
From then on, they fought the thread everytime it fell, but their dragons quickly grew too large to fit where they once had. The riders sent out scouts, searching for a suitable home, and soon after, Silver Glow Weyr was established, led by that first Weyrwoman, Ophelia, and her Weyrmate, T'son, rider of the Onyx who had caught her Ruby upon her first Rising. The first clutch arrived soon after the move, and all the Hatchlings were healthy and strong, though there was no Queen.
From then on, they were the riders of Silver Glow Weyr, defenders of their little area of Pern, completely unaware of what was going on in the rest of the world. Their society slid backwards, and unfortunately, the knowledge that had been so carefully guarded at one time was lost in a horrific fire, along with the notes on the dragons' creation.
Then came the Long Interval, when no no Thread fell for 400 Turns. Due to this, the Queens' clutches began falling off, as there was no need for dragons to protect the skies. The Holders began to expand their holdings, and weren't protecting them as well as they once had, letting things that were green and alive grow far too close. Despite the warnings of the riders, gypsy bands formed, traveling Pern and selling their wares, and holdless sons became more common.
Only one aging Queen remained when the Red Star appeared in the Sky once again. But there is hope! For she laid a clutch containing 2 Queens eggs, both of which hatched and Bonded. Ruby Aleerith and Sugilite Lucianuth, beautiful examples of their hue, and powerful as well, Bonded to the Weyrborn(then fostered) Deiya and the Holdborn Nanaya respectively.
These twin Queens are now the hope for Silver Glow, for their mother is old, and no longer able to clutch. And her rider, Annalise, has said she will retire permanently when one of the twins Rises, leaving whoever goes up first in charge of the Weyr...
